‘Ils sont jeunes, étudiants toulousains et ils ont décidé de résister de manière non-violente. Leur combat, abroger le CPE, et au-delà même, repenser cette société qui veut faire d’eux des travailleurs obéissants au lieu de citoyens (bien-) pensants. Les deux réalisateurs ont suivi leur mouvement, de colère qui monte, en espoir et découragements. L’histoire d’un mouvement social qui naît, vit et peut-être meurt…Sans doute, vous souvenez-vous de ces mouvements d’étudiants et de lycéens « anti-CPE », au printemps 2006. Naïma Bouferkas et Nicolas Potin, déjà auteurs d’un documentaire sur le centre d’accueil pour les réfugiés de Sangatte , y étaient. Au départ, soucieux de saisir l’instant, ils suivent et participent au mouvement, caméra à l’épaule ; montant chaque soir les rushs afin de les présenter en assemblée générale le lendemain. Et puis très vite, ils se rendent compte de la qualité de leurs images et de la possibilité d’en faire un long métrage. Ainsi naît Il S’agit de ne pas se rendre

Le propos est le mouvement « anti-CPE », mais le film va plus loin, dénonçant le mépris de nos dirigeants, et des représentants des forces de l’ordre face à ces jeunes qui veulent à tout prix éviter le conflit violent. Ainsi, d’abord, ils envahissent la préfecture dans un climat de calme et de parfaite coordination. Mais il n’est de combat sans violence, et face à l’incompréhension, voire à l’indifférence de la société, leur mouvement se durcit et leurs actions deviennent plus musclées : des vitrines sont cassées, le centre commercial est squatté, les consommateurs sont « pris en otages » (quoique l’on puisse largement discuter de ce quasi-pléonasme). Et puis il y a les arrestations de certains, pour l’exemple, la récupération des syndicats, et enfin le gouvernement qui lâche, un peu. Alors la discussion reprend de plus belle en AG, faut-il oui ou non, se rendre ? …La réponse est dans le titre.

On pourrait reprocher aux deux réalisateurs d’êtres juges et partie, certes, mais l’intelligence de leur propos réside dans le fait de donner la parole à chacun. Les manifestants, bien sûr, donnent à entendre leurs désaccords, leurs craintes, ou la prise de pouvoir de certains sur les autres ; la police aussi, par l’intermédiaire de cette fonctionnaire calme et déterminée que ses collègues ont laissée seule fasse à la foule en colère ; et puis les usagers, salariés, clients ou passants, plus ou moins solidaires, mais prêts à dialoguer. Là encore, réside la vérité du film, cette soudaine possibilité du dialogue. Il suffit qu’un mouvement social dure et se durcisse pour que la société s’interroge. Chacun a son opinion, mais il faut des circonstances comme celles-ci pour qu’elle puisse s’exprimer. Car l’arrêt de travail offre cette possibilité du temps suspendu, où la réflexion et le dialogue sont, soudain, possibles. A l’instar de cette séquence tragi-comique avec un cadre de Airbus, dans l’aube naissante d’un jour où tout serait possible.

Cependant, le film , à ne rien vouloir commenter (aucune voix off, juste quelques cartons succincts, distillés de part et d’autre), désoriente parfois le spectateur. Qui ? Où ? De quoi parle-t-on ? Mais il y a fort à parier que les réalisateurs, qui n’ont pas encore achevé la version définitive de leur film, sauront lui trouver une fin, même si le combat, lui, continue.

Le 12 janvier, il sera à Paris pour parler de sa biographie. L’événement se tiendra – Amphithéatre Eyrolles, Librairie Eyrolles, 5, 57, 61 et 63 boulevard Saint-Germain. de 17h30 à 18h30.

Le 13 janvier, à Lyon, RMS nous expliquera pourquoi le logiciel libre est un maillon essentiel dans une société libre et solidaire. L’événement aura lieu à l’Université Lyon 2, Grand Amphithéâtre, 18 Quai Claude Bernard, Lyon 7e de 19h à 21h. Cette conférence est organisée à l’initiative de l’ALDIL (Association Lyonnaise pour le Développement de l’Informatique Libre) et la licence professionnelle « CoLibre » du département ICOM de l’université Lumière Lyon2 (pour s’y rendre : Tram T1 arrêt « Quai Claude Bernard »).

Le 14 janvier, il se rendra à Grenoble pour nous rappeler l’histoire, le but et la philosophie de ces logiciels libres, qui, mis ensemble, sont utilisés par près de 10 millions de personne dans le monde. Software ‘Saint’ Richard Stallman fights for computing freedom — and against corporate control

Twenty minutes into our interview, at the Downtown Crossing headquarters of the Free Software Foundation (FSF), Richard Stallman learns that I own an iPhone.

“That’s a shame,” he says, leaning back in his chair, fixing me with a stern gaze, and fiddling, as he’ll do for much of the next hour and a half, with his beard.

Stallman founded the FSF in 1985, two years after he’d launched the still-ongoing mass-collaboration GNU software project at MIT — which provided the fundamentals for the hugely popular GNU/Linux operating system that’s in millions of computers today. He has no truck with the “iMoan.” Nor with the “iScrod.” And certainly not with “MS-DOG,” as he derisively dubs Microsoft’s MS-DOS operating system.

Such proprietary technology, trussed up with “malicious features” designed “specifically for the restriction of the user,” says Stallman, “impose control to an unusual degree” and represent “forms of subjugation.”

And here you thought you were just checking your e-mail.

But Stallman — a legend in the programmer community for more than a quarter century — considers it his life’s work to proselytize the free-software gospel, educating the lay people who’d otherwise assume that Microsoft or Apple are exclusively synonymous with computing.

“They think it’s natural that the software developers will have power over them,” he says. “My mission is to point out to them that that isn’t natural. It’s wrong. It’s an injustice. And they shouldn’t stand for it.”

Some in the open-source community (a note about semantics anon) have griped that Stallman is a stubborn utopian, whose Manichean worldview and rhetoric are counterproductive to the larger cause.

Others hail him as a principled and pugnacious advocate for freedom and cooperation, waging war against any and all outside interference with the way we engage with technology — which, of course, is these days tantamount to the way we live.

“Richard has written some of the most important software, and has changed the very way we make software forever,” says open-source advocate Bruce Perens. “He has contributed equally to technology, economics, and freedom.”

In that Stallman is such a renowned programmer, if he’d chosen to travel that route, it’s not inconceivable that he could be a billionaire like his co-generationists Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Instead, he’s never owned a home. Or a car. Or even a cell phone. He admits, “I think my main expense literally is food.”

His lifestyle is a pointed rejoinder to this mediated consumer culture of litigiously enforced copyrights, trackable GPS-equipped cell phones, radio-frequency identification chips, and omnipresent surveillance cameras. And his pronouncements — on matters technological, but also geopolitical and environmental — mean to stir us to join his fight.

The tricky part: far fewer people than he’d wish share the courage of his convictions.

Stallman may sometimes sound like a voice in the technological wilderness. (And, with his tangled hair and bramble of beard, may look the part, too.) But that doesn’t necessarily make what he says less true.

“What we need,” he says, “is enough people not to be outright cowards, and we can win. I really care about freedom and I’m willing to make some sacrifices for it. There are such strong forces arrayed to take away our freedom, and it’s vanishing so fast that, without sacrifices, we’re sure to lose it.”

The death of cleverness
In 1969, at age 16, Stallman was invited by IBM to its New York Scientific Center as a precocious if socially maladroit high schooler, to try out his first computer. “It was rather large,” he says, “more than enough to fill this room. The program I wrote soon got too big for it.”

After high school, Stallman headed to Harvard. (They’d offered more scholarship money than MIT, he reasons. Also: “The male-female relationship at Harvard was not quite as skewed as it was at MIT.”)

Freshman year, however, Stallman landed a job at MIT’s artificial-intelligence laboratory. “They had a computer with the biggest memory anywhere around,” he says. “An entire megabyte.”

It was there that Stallman became a lynchpin of the campus’s fabled ’70s hacker culture — an anarchic, collaborative free-for-all where programmers, in the spirit of “playful cleverness,” gave a huge push forward to computing power. (There Stallman developed Emacs, the massively popular text editor, in 1975.)

Code was lent and borrowed and swapped and adapted, freely and without concern for ownership. “This was simply people working together, advancing human knowledge,” says Stallman.

But by the early ’80s, the huge lucre to be grabbed at the dawn of the PC era had lured away many of the lab’s best minds and “the community mostly died.”

Nowadays, Stallman clearly still has respect and affection for the brainiacs who populate MIT. (He isn’t employed there, but maintains an office on campus as an unpaid research affiliate.) Just watch him on YouTube, doing the Soulja Boy dance with them on the quad.

But he notes that lots of kids these days “get distracted by the things they can do with their computer and don’t look into how it works. And maybe that’s because what they’re used to is proprietary software that won’t let them see how it works.”

“This stuff that we call open source, which has taken over the IT industry and is the foundation of the Internet, was started by Richard,” says Perens. “If we were to put a dollar value on it, it would be at least $1 trillion.”

But, says Stallman, “I couldn’t make up for the loss of my self-respect with any amount of money. What I saw in the early ’80s, when the earlier software-sharing community died, when the only way you could buy a new computer and use it was with a proprietary-operating system, was a life in which people were trying to get as much power over each other as they possibly could.” Pursuing a career in proprietary software, he once said, would be “making the world ugly for pay.”

“There are some people who think the function of software is just to make a business money,” says Perens. “Even some so-called open-source pundits. Richard thinks the function of software is to help people.”

So Stallman set to work crafting an alternative. GNU — the name is a recursive acronym for “GNU’s not Unix” — was conceived as the world’s first entirely free operating system. It’s been evolving (not unlike Wikipedia) via open and collaborative global tinkering for the past 25 years.

As one award given to the project noted, the “ubiquity, breadth, and quality of its freely available, redistributable, and modifiable software [have] changed the way the computer world operates.”

It’s thanks to that pioneering project that more than one computer geek has proclaimed that “Stallman is God.”

“That’s a mistake,” he demurs. “I’m not God — I’m just a saint.” At many of his dozens and dozens of speeches each year, Stallman will don a flowing robe, clutch a netbook like a tablet, and place an old computer-disk platter on his head like a halo. Saint IGNUcius of the church of Emacs, he calls himself.

“I wanted GNU to be a convenient system for ordinary users, not just for wizards,” says Stallman. “Because everybody who’s using a computer deserves freedom.”

Freedom. Sometimes it seems like Stallman spouts the word more than his moral/political antipode George W. Bush. But for Stallman, freedom is the ne plus ultra of social values. “All works of practical use have to be free,” he insists. “It’s not just software.”

‘Think free speech, not free beer.’
The FSF’s mission is based around “the four essential freedoms,” says Richard Stallman. “Freedom zero is the freedom to run the program as you wish. Freedom one is the freedom to study the source code, and then change it. Freedom two is the freedom to help other people — to redistribute exact copies of the program to others, when you wish. Freedom three is the freedom to contribute to your community — to distribute modified versions of the program when you wish.”

If any one of those freedoms is missing from a piece of software, he argues, “that means a program imposes an unethical social system for its use. The use of a proprietary program is a social problem. The goal of the free-software movement is to put an end to this problem. All users should have these four freedoms because all users deserve them.”

Consumed by a mission
He may be a deity to many, but plug “Stallman is” into Google, and the clause also comes back completed with some rather unflattering adjectives: “irrational” . . . “irrelevant” . . . “insane” . . . “an unabashed idiot.”And those descriptors don’t come from bitter tech execs, fearful that his crusade is siphoning customers away from their lucrative programs. (Although corporations should be afraid: it was reported last week that a third of all netbooks shipped in 2009 came installed with GNU/Linux rather than Microsoft.)

Rather, they’re usually from partisans of open-source software who (ostensibly, at least) should be his allies. For many lay people and journalists, the terms “open source” and “free” software are interchangeable. This is to Stallman’s unending chagrin. The former is a development model, he explains (over and over again). The latter is a political movement.

And while both exist in opposition to corporate behemoths, their ends and means are often in conflict. “Open-source [partisans] never suggest that there’s anything unethical about proprietary software,” says Stallman. “They just don’t want to rock that boat.” Instead, they “want to convince businesses to adopt free software, and they figure that, if they raise any kind of ethical question, that it will be off-putting to businessmen.”

Many in the open-source camp have little patience for his high-flown philosophizing. If the goal is to get as many people to use open-source software as possible, they argue, giving people guff for owning iPods isn’t helpful.

“Stallman’s idealism is killing open source,” wrote one poster on the tech message board ZDNet. “While there was a time to be a rabid idealist fighting corporate foes, that time is fast changing, and Stallman is stuck too deep in his philosophy to act on the practicalities of the matter.”

(All the same, if many are frustrated that Stallman’s rigidity hurts their cause, one of his strokes of genius was coining the idea of liberalized “copyleft” — as opposed to “copyright” — specifically, GNU General Public License, which has been widely adopted, thereby allowing his philosophy to propagate in subtler ways; learn more in Jeff Inglis’s sidebar “GNU and You“.)

“It’s not about petty politics or ego with Richard,” says Eric Raymond, a major popularizer of open source who’s known Stallman for decades but has been cast (against his will, he says) as something of a political rival. “It’s that he’s so consumed with his mission that he has trouble seeing anything outside. I’ll say things in public like, ‘I think victory is more important than ideological purity,’ and that just infuriates him.”

And while most open sourcers still laud Stallman as a pioneer and patron saint, acknowledging that his copious lines of code are the bedrock for the movement, some — especially younger programmers — don’t.

“He really is brighter than almost everyone else on the planet,” says Raymond. “His IQ is up in the range where trying to measure it starts to get silly. Sometimes he doesn’t get the credit he’s due as a programmer. Yet to a significant extent, that’s his own fault. He’s tangled up his programming with the ethical/moral/ideological thing. When people reject that, they end up poor-mouthing his programming, too — and that’s really unfair.”

Convenient injustice
Scuffles with the open sourcers aside, it’s still the obvious culprits who are presenting the biggest hurdles to the FSF’s mission, says Stallman. “Microsoft, mainly, is the company that actively works to prevent free software from spreading. Mostly by buying the support of institutions that have influence in society — for instance, schools. Microsoft hands out gratis copies of Windows the way tobacco companies used to hand out gratis packs of cigarettes.”

(When reached for reaction, a Microsoft spokesperson said the company had no comment.)

Everywhere he looks, says Stallman, he sees corporations and centralized authority trumping or co-opting basic liberties. The FSF is just another front in that war.

“It’s part of the general importance of freedom and human rights. What’s generally going on in the world today is that freedom is being taken away.”

As such, Stallman refuses to travel on Amtrak, because he chafes at being asked for an ID. “It’s an injustice to forbid people to travel anonymously.” (He can’t boycott airplanes — impossible for the globe-trotting public face of free software — but does take the bus whenever he can.)

He says he doesn’t own a cell phone or do much Web browsing because he doesn’t want anyone to know where he is or what he’s reading about. “Cell phones,” he says, “are tracking-and-surveillance devices.” When surfing the Net, he warns, “if you use Google, you should not identify yourself — don’t log in.”

He’s also a critic of the newly popular trend of “cloud computing,” where users’ data is stored on providers’ servers rather than on their own hard drives. “It means ‘ignore the question of who controls your computing and your data.’ That’s foolish. You should do your computing on your own computer with your own copy of a free program.”

Yet Stallman shows just how hard his absolutist positions are to live by. He won’t show ID to get on a train, but “could conceivably have someone else buy a ticket for me.” He doesn’t have a cell, but will “occasionally use other people’s.” He won’t browse the Web on his own laptop, only “from a computer that I share with other people.”

Clearly, he’s an unusual case. For most people, the handiness of cell phones outweighs any symbolic protest against a nebulous threat of being tracked by corporate-owned satellites. And what about those many millions who fawn over their iPhones or their MacBooks? Who enjoy being able to download from a galaxy of apps, or who like the sexy graphics?

“I can understand, but their priorities are in the wrong place,” says Stallman. “What do you say to anybody who gives up his freedom for some kind of enjoyment or convenience?”

Free China?
When I meet Stallman, he’s recently returned from Indonesia and is about to fly to Mexico and Chile. He guesses he’ll sleep at his rented pad in Cambridge just 84 nights this year.

If some say Stallman is tilting against windmills here at home, the FSF has made some inroads abroad. “There are governments” — Ecuador, Venezuela, and Brazil to name three — “that have established a policy of moving to free software,” he says. That makes sense “for every government,” of course, “except for one that is totally cowed by business, which is the kind of government nobody deserves to have.”

(Most American government computers run Microsoft, but free software did score a high-profile victory recently when President Barack Obama adopted the content-management system Drupal — distributed under the GNU General Public License — for the whitehouse.gov site.)

Further east, interestingly — perhaps ironically, for a country that restricts Web access behind the infamous “Great Firewall of China” — the People’s Republic is “one of the places where free software is growing by leaps and bounds,” says Stallman. He holds up his Chinese-made netbook. “The company that makes this is a free-software supporter. And the head of the project that makes the processor chip is a free-software supporter. He had come to a speech I gave in Beijing in the late ’90s.”

I ask about the potential for free software to assist in a social-justice movement — à la Iran’s “Twitter Revolution” this past June. “Any people who are in political opposition should use free software, because [that makes it] harder for police to spy on them through their own computers.”

So, says Stallman, “in other countries, we’re making progress.” And in the US? “In the US, the propaganda that says ‘business is everything, just bow down to it,’ has brainwashed everyone so much that it’s hard. We haven’t abandoned working in the US. But I try to make my efforts where I see that they can do some good.”

Maybe, I suggest, there’s just too much else for people to worry about these days? “I don’t want to compete,” he says. “I’m not going to say that free software is more important than stopping global warming. But they’re all related. Because they all have to do with re-establishing freedom and democracy.”

I ask Stallman if he’s optimistic. Surprisingly for a man with such ironclad convictions, he says no: the corporations just have too much of a stranglehold on government and society.

But “if we fight,” he says, “at least there’s a chance we might win.”

Reclassement chez Yahoo Grenoble

“Yahoo! licencie en France pour recruter “low cost” ailleurs… Après avoir modifié sa structure comptable pour que ses bénéfices soient imposés en Suisse, Yahoo! prépare aujourd’hui la fermeture de son site de recherche et développement à Grenoble. Ce pôle d’excellence en ingénierie, inauguré en grande pompe par la ministre de l’économie Christine Lagarde, n’aura donc vécu qu’un an et demi. Selon la ministre, ce site était pourtant « un très, très bel exemple de coopération entre les entreprises, les centres de recherche et les pouvoirs publics. » Rappelons que l’État offre un crédit d’impôt de 30 % aux entreprises engagées dans ce type de projets. Cela n’aura pas suffi. Malgré des résultats bien meilleurs que prévu au troisième trimestre et un bénéfice net multiplié par trois, Yahoo! s’apprête à mettre en oeuvre un nouveau plan social visant à supprimer tous les postes d’ingénieurs en France : 79 salariés sur 214 sont concernés.

Le premier plan, conduit en début d’année, avait déjà supprimé 15 % des effectifs. Cette fois, ce ne sont pas les réductions de coût nécessaires pour faire face à la crise qui sont invoquées par la direction, mais une « réorganisation » de l’ingénierie, dont on s’aperçoit qu’elle passera désormais par l’Inde ou la Chine. Car Yahoo! continue à recruter massivement des ingénieurs mais c’est désormais à Bangalore et à Taïwan que la plupart des postes sont ouverts.

Carol Bartz, qui dirige le groupe, n’avait d’ailleurs pas hésité à déclarer, lors d’une rencontre en avril dernier avec les salariés parisiens, que le recrutement d’ingénieurs en Europe de l’Ouest n’avait aucun sens. Elle avait alors expressément demandé que cette réunion ne soit pas retransmise sur le site de Grenoble. On comprend mieux pourquoi aujourd’hui.

Indignés par cette situation, les salariés de Yahoo! ont décidé d’un mouvement de grève le mercredi 16 décembre”
